Hey guys, new here and i had a few questions.

First off let me say ive never built a new computer before but i am extremely handy.

The most i ever did on a computer was change the ram, video card and add/swap out disc drives.

What i want to know is if it is worth it for me to build a new computer. I currently have an alienware aurora 5500, from like 2004-5 maybe? Anyway it was a total waste of money (1400) and its not even that great, its far outdated. The specs are

Microsoft XP

AMD Anthlon 3500+ ~2.2Ghz

1 gig of ram

nvidia geforce fx 5500

I orignally bought it with the "alienware is supposed to be for gaming so its worth it mentality" but it turned out that it could barely handle battlefield 2

So basically i wanted to know if it was worth it for me to go for a learning experience and build my own. Is it possible to do from a guide? it didnt seem too complicated to do. I also wanted to know what parts were worth salvaging, or am i better off not salvaging anything, and giving the entire computer to my parents who use a dell from 2002-3 for checking email and stuff.

The components in it are obviously the 3500+ processor, the geforce which i doubt is worth it to keep for a new comp,

2 sticks of 512 ram made by alienware i guess

enermax 460w power supply

Motherboard (not sure who makes it and dont know how to find out)

DVD rom drive, dont know who makes it

Mad Dog dvd play and burning drive

single 80gb hard drive, again not sure how to find out the maker.

All help is GREALTY appreciated

There is much more powerful options out there, but it's far from being an outdated system (As I'm using an Athlon XP right now, and an Athlon 64 3200+ up at school). The weakest link in it seems to be the FX5500, which while in its time was a good card, is now severly dated. You have 2 options

1) Upgrade the current setup, new video card and add some RAM would be my recomendations
or
2) build new

Depending on specifics, this may change, but going from assumptions on the products, I'm guessing your running DDR RAM and an AGP video card. To find this out for sure, use Everest: http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

In that case, all you could really salvage is the PSU, optical drives and the hard drive. If it were me, I'd upgrade it, as the PSU can handle a higher video card, and find an AGP version of a GeForce 7600 or Radeon X1K series card.

where in everest doest it tell me if its AGP or pci, i think i have pci but im nto sure how to tell from looking at it. As far as the ram, its ddr. If i have a pci slot i can get a 7600gt for less than 100 dollars which is not bad at all.

also how do i know if im overclock compatible

In Everest

Display > GPU, then listed in the specs look for "Bus Type"

I have not OCed a video card, but no amount of ocing will make new games run well on that card. If you are really interested in overclocking video cards you can try it on your card just to see how it works. With all ocing you will have to watch your temps, as you overclock your temps will rise, then your system will be unstable.
