im going to buy a new P4 and have narrowed my choices to the 3.0 800 fsb 2mb L2 = 240$ or 3.2 800 fsb 2mb L2 = 280$ I would like to spend the lower amount but was wondering if there is a big difference in these two chips performance wise also was wondering in a gaming PC does the 2 mb L2 cache make a big difference in performance in gaming? Thx in advance for all opinions, comments, or suggestions Oh ya before u ask i do have a socket 775 motherboard

Here is a good reply to your answer, and it also compares the new pentium 6xx series to the 5xx

id go for the 3.0 ghz, can easily be overclocked to the 3.2 or even a little more. I have a 3.4 overclocked to a 4.0ghz to give you an example.

sorry forgot to login, also go for the 6** as you will probably want the 64 bit extentions, and has better thermal management. not sure about the prices though. Though i heard intel is phasing out the 5** so they should be around the same price so people pick the 6** over the 5**.

I read that whole thing and damn is it long but i gather this that there is very little performance advantage now but when 64 bit windows OS and games come out the 6XX series would be better suited for future addvances with that said im going to get a 640 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-197&depa=1

Not the 5xx series EE, but the new 6xx series like this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-198&depa=1
