Hello,
I am trying to salvage my old computer(Gateway Performance 2000) and don't really need to build a new one from scratch, just add some needed components with a new P4 processor being a BIG priority. (I have a P3 733 MHz now) I'm pretty sure that I'll need a motherboard as well to accomodate the procesor.
I have a general idea of what I need to get by doing some online comparison shopping:
Motherboard - Intel "D865PERLL" I865PE Chipset motherboard for Intel socket 478 CPU
Processor - Intel LGA 775 Pentium 4 630 3.0 GHz 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache Processor w/ Hyper Threading technology
All the other accessories will be from my old computer. BTW - I do quite a bit of 3d digital animation and gaming (Doom 3 to be specific)
Any help on this?

You will most likely have to buy new ram with the new motherboard. Also you might want to look into a new video card if you value graphics.

Welcome to computersOC!
Most likely you will only be able to save the CD-drives, floppy drive and hard drive. Backup your hard drive data before you move it to the new computer.
